Thank you for submitting this idea. We are actually already speaking with dining services about the possibility of introducing food at night times after late-night service (or after dinner service in Mission and Driscoll).
I am wondering whether you are asking about expanding access to soft-serve ice cream or normal ice cream. One concern is that soft-serve ice cream machines must be restocked regularly. For this reason I think it may be easier to offer normal tubs of ice cream during off-hours.
One other concern from Dining Services is regarding food safety. Because dining services staff will not be available to ensure that the food service area is kept clean and sanitary, my understanding is that they would prefer to provide pre-packaged food that is not susceptible to contamination.
Finally, Dining Services must balance any cost increases from providing food at off-hours by either reducing service during normal hours, or increasing the cost of meal plans. For this reason, it might make sense to investigate simply providing expanded vending machine options which would not require dining services to subsidize them.
Bearing these concerns in mind, we will continue to work with dining services to expand food access and update this thread when we have more news.
